While rail connections between the Ligurian ports of Vado Ligure, Genoa, and La Spezia and major inland logistics hubs will remain operational, service performance is expected to be impacted by increased transit times, reduced capacity availability, and occasional unscheduled cancellations during the construction period.  

To mitigate operational impact, Maersk is implementing alternative rail routings where technically and logistically feasible. Nevertheless, such contingency measures may entail extended end-to-end transit durations, diminished network adaptability, and reduced resilience to service recovery.  

Key infrastructure interventions affecting rail operations include:  

• 2–16 August: Temporary closure of the Verona–Vicenza line, potentially constraining rail capacity between the Ligurian ports and Padua;  

• 17 August–14 September: Closure of the Ovada corridor, which may limit capacity for 40-foot high-cube (40HC) container movements from Liguria to inland distribution centers;  

• 24–29 August: Suspension of rail services between Vado Ligure and Verona due to a planned track interruption.  

Maersk advises customers to advance shipment planning—particularly for time-sensitive cargo—and confirms ongoing coordination with Italian rail operators and infrastructure managers to minimise disruption to cargo flows.  

Trucking alternatives will remain accessible throughout the affected period. However, any incremental costs associated with road-based contingency transport—including fuel surcharges, tolls, and handling fees—will be the responsibility of the customer, as these infrastructure works fall outside Maersk’s operational control.
