CMA CGM has officially commissioned the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME—the world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership flying the French flag. The vessel commenced its inaugural commercial voyage from Shanghai, China, and is scheduled to arrive at Le Havre, France, in early July 2024.
The CMA CGM NOTRE DAME is the lead unit of a series of ten 24,212-TEU LNG-powered containerships to be registered under the French flag, all of which are slated for delivery between 2026 and 2028. Measuring 400 meters in length, 62 meters in beam, and 75 meters in height, the vessel operates on the company’s French Asia Line (FAL), serving key ports across Asia and Northern Europe—including Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Singapore, Le Havre, Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Tangier Med.
Designed with sustainability and operational excellence at its core, the vessel integrates dual-fuel LNG propulsion with state-of-the-art digital technologies: a fully digitized bridge equipped with augmented reality navigation aids, 360-degree panoramic visualization systems, AI-driven route optimization, and smart energy-management systems. Its 18,600 m³ LNG fuel tank enables extended-range operations on the Asia–Europe trade lane. Notably, structural and architectural optimizations have increased container capacity by 280 TEUs—reaching a total nominal capacity of 24,212 TEUs—without altering the vessel’s external dimensions. The ship can accommodate up to 1,600 refrigerated (reefer) containers.
Commanded by Captain Nicolas Le Scornet, the vessel is operated by a crew of approximately 30 maritime professionals. CMA CGM describes the CMA CGM NOTRE DAME as emblematic of a new generation of ultra-large, environmentally advanced containerships—uniquely balancing scale, operational performance, and energy efficiency.
