CMA CGM Group and Gemadept have officially inaugurated Phase 2 of the Gemalink Container Terminal in Cai Mep, southern Vietnam. This strategic expansion reinforces Gemalink’s role as a pivotal maritime gateway for Southeast Asia and enhances regional supply chain resilience amid rising trade volumes.
Upon completion by 2027, the terminal’s annual handling capacity will increase from 1.7 million to 3.0 million TEUs. The Phase 2 infrastructure enhancements include a 450-meter quay extension, yard area expansion from 32 to 44 hectares, and the installation of five additional ship-to-shore (STS) cranes—bringing the total fleet to 13 units.
CMA CGM holds a 25% equity stake in Gemalink. This investment represents a significant milestone in the Group’s long-term port infrastructure strategy across Southeast Asia and underscores its sustained commitment to Vietnam’s economic development, trade modernization, and logistics sector advancement.
Since commencing operations in 2021, Gemalink has consistently operated at full design capacity. It currently handles approximately 1.7 million TEUs annually and is recognized as one of the most operationally efficient container terminals in Vietnam’s Vung Tau province. Its strategic location along key international shipping lanes facilitates robust import-export growth and supports national trade objectives.
Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President, Operations & Assets at CMA CGM, emphasized that the Phase 2 launch reflects the Group’s enduring partnership with Gemadept and its deep-rooted confidence in Vietnam’s long-term growth trajectory. She noted that the expansion will further integrate Vietnam into global supply networks and advance the nation’s vision of becoming a leading regional logistics hub by 2050.
This initiative aligns closely with CMA CGM’s comprehensive, decades-long presence in Vietnam—established in 1989. Today, the Group deploys 29 weekly liner services across seven Vietnamese ports and maintains a nationwide operational footprint through offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Quy Nhon—complemented by integrated logistics solutions provided by CEVA Logistics.
