SCA suspends discount for large containerships
2026-04-12

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has discontinued the 15% transit fee discount previously extended to large container vessels. According to an official circular published on the SCA’s website on 2 April 2026, the suspension became effective on Tuesday, 1 April 2026.

Originally introduced in May 2025, the incentive was designed to encourage the reversion of container vessel traffic—diverted via the Cape of Good Hope—to the Suez Canal route. The discount applied automatically to vessels with a Suez Canal Net Tonnage (SCNT) of 130,000 tons or greater, regardless of cargo condition (laden or ballast) or direction of transit (northbound or southbound). No application or supporting documentation was required.

With the discontinuation of this measure, eligible vessels will now be subject to standard transit fees.

This policy adjustment reflects a strategic recalibration by the SCA in response to evolving operational requirements and commercial dynamics affecting the waterway.
