Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd quietly unleash their "Gemini move"
2026-10-21

The relaunched FM1 service will provide direct weekly sailings between major Asian gateway ports—including Qingdao, Ningbo, and Tanjung Pelepas—and Khor Fakkan, United Arab Emirates, a strategic transshipment and distribution hub in the Upper Gulf.

Vessel rotation (weekly):

Qingdao → Ningbo → Tanjung Pelepas → Khor Fakkan → Singapore → Qingdao

Inaugural sailing details:

Vessel: Maersk Athabasca (Voyage 642W)

Estimated departure: Qingdao, 17 October 2026

Estimated arrival: Khor Fakkan, 16 November 2026

This relaunch enhances direct ocean freight capacity to Khor Fakkan, supporting growing trade flows between Asia and the Gulf region. Complementing the maritime leg, Maersk’s integrated inland logistics solutions—including rail, road, and intermodal services—will ensure seamless onward distribution to destinations across the Upper Gulf.

All existing booking policies, cargo acceptance criteria, and regulatory compliance requirements applicable to Middle East shipments remain fully in force.

Both carriers reaffirmed their commitment to operational resilience and stakeholder transparency, noting that the Gemini Cooperation’s service portfolio remains subject to periodic review in light of evolving regional security conditions and trade dynamics in the Middle East.
