MSC secretly reroute its U.S. Midwest service through Canada?
2026-10-10

This cross-border logistics solution integrates MSC’s scheduled ocean services to Canadian ports with proven, high-frequency rail connections operated by major North American Class I railroads—extending seamlessly to key inland hubs including Chicago, Detroit, and St. Paul.

The routing offers importers a viable complement to conventional US East Coast gateways, enhancing supply chain resilience by diversifying port entry points—particularly valuable during periods of port congestion, labor disruptions, or operational volatility.

Three dedicated weekly services underpin this offering:

  • Montreal Express

  • Canada Express

  • MED-Canada

Montreal Express and Canada Express each provide two weekly sailings from shared North European ports—including Antwerp and Le Havre—ensuring schedule reliability and capacity flexibility.

MED-Canada connects major Mediterranean gateway ports in Italy, Spain, and Portugal with Canada’s Atlantic seaboard, strengthening trans-Mediterranean connectivity to North America.

Upon discharge at Montreal or Halifax, containers are transferred directly to rail for onward movement to core US Midwest markets, enabling end-to-end visibility and coordinated intermodal execution.

MSC emphasizes that this integrated ocean-rail network expands customers’ routing flexibility, improves load planning precision, and supports dynamic fulfillment needs—including seasonal demand surges and evolving distribution strategies.

Transit times vary according to origin port, final destination, and selected service. MSC advises that published transit times are indicative only and subject to adjustment based on prevailing operational conditions, vessel schedules, and rail network performance.
