MSC has introduced revised Freight All Kinds (FAK) rates for containerized shipments originating from the Far East—including ports in Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia—to destinations in North Europe, the Mediterranean region (encompassing the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, the Adriatic, and North Africa), and the Black Sea. These rates become effective on 15 August 2026 and remain valid through 31 August 2026, unless extended or amended by official notice.
All rates are quoted in US dollars (USD), on a base-port-to-base-port basis. For shipments involving out-ports—i.e., ports not designated as primary service ports—the applicable Terminal Handling Charges (THC), Terminal Arrival Operations (TAO), and Terminal Departure Operations (TAD) will continue to apply in accordance with standard tariff provisions.
The announced FAK rates comprise:
• The base ocean freight rate;
• A Global Fuel Surcharge (GFS) of USD 271 per TEU, applicable to all shipments for August 2026;
• An Emission Control Area (ECA) Surcharge of USD 15 per TEU for shipments destined to or transiting through the Mediterranean, as well as those bound for Poland, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and France;
• An elevated ECA Surcharge of USD 52 per TEU for shipments to other Nordic and Baltic countries (including Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania);
• A Carbon Limitation Surcharge (CLS) of USD 20 per TEU, uniformly applied across all covered trade lanes;
• A Carbon Review Surcharge (CRS): USD 81 per TEU for North European destinations and USD 120 per TEU for Mediterranean destinations.
MSC clarifies that these FAK rates do not apply to cargo classified under International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations—including hazardous, temperature-controlled, or otherwise specially regulated goods—or to high-value commodities, which remain subject to separate contractual or tariff-based pricing arrangements.
