Maersk launches both peak season surcharge and emergency fee simultaneously

The revised charges will enter into force between 1 August and 10 August 2026, with the specific effective date contingent on the corresponding trade lane.

New Peak Season Surcharges for Saudi Arabia

Commencing 10 August 2026, Maersk will levy a new Peak Season Surcharge on cargo transported from Far East Asia to Saudi Arabia.

The surcharge is set at US$1,000 per 20-foot container and US$2,000 per 40-foot and 45-foot container.

This surcharge applies to shipments originating from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and other economies/territories in Far East Asia.

Adjustment to Surcharges for Northern Europe and the Mediterranean

Maersk has also adjusted the existing PSS for shipments from Far East Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

The revised surcharge will take effect from 3 August 2026 for most origins in Far East Asia, and from 10 August 2026 for cargo originating in South Korea.

For destinations in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, the carrier will levy a surcharge of US$250 per 20-foot container and US$500 per 40-foot and 45-foot container.

For shipments destined for Syria, the surcharge is set at €220 per 20-foot container and €440 per 40-foot and 45-foot container.

This surcharge applies to all container types, including dry containers, reefer containers, tank containers and flat-rack containers.

Adjustment to Emergency Contingency Surcharge

Maersk has also adjusted its Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) applicable to exports departing from the ports of Salalah and Sohar in Oman, and Fujairah and Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates.

The revised ECS will enter into force on 1 August 2026 for non-FMC (Federal Maritime Commission) trades.

The adjusted charges apply to shipments bound for Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, South Africa, the West Coast of South America, the Caribbean, Central America and the East Coast of South America.

The surcharge amount varies based on the origin, destination and container type, with dry container rates reaching a maximum of US$5,300 per 20-foot container and US$6,500 per 40-foot container on select trade lanes.
