Container ship deviates from Iran's "authorized route" and runs aground! ?

According to Iran’s state-affiliated Mehr News Agency, the incident involved a vessel deviating from the officially prescribed “Route of Authority” in the Strait of Hormuz. No official identification of the vessel was provided; however, a Telegram post circulated alongside the report included a photograph depicting a grounded feeder-sized container ship bearing cargo containers marked with the logos of CMA CGM and its subsidiary CNC Lines.

TankerTrackers.com, using publicly available video footage broadcast by Iranian media and satellite imagery, identified the grounded vessel as the Comoros-flagged "Arista". The ship ran aground in March north of Hormuz Island. Notably, the "Arista" is subject to U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions and has been linked to Iran’s Shamkhani network—a sanctioned procurement and logistics facilitation structure.

Vanguard Tech, a maritime security consultancy, reported that the vessel likely grounded in shallow waters after transiting south of Iran’s Larak Island—outside the northern corridor recognized by Tehran.

Al Jazeera noted that the extent of structural or operational damage remains unconfirmed. It cited statements from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, relayed via Iranian state media, warning that “any entry or exit through routes other than the ‘Route of Authority’ in the Persian Gulf could lead to irreparable incidents”—a position reiterated in multiple official advisories.

Iran formally recognizes only the northern corridor of the Strait of Hormuz, which falls under its de facto control, and mandates prior authorization from the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) for all vessels seeking passage through this route.

This incident follows recent escalatory actions in the region: last week, Iranian forces targeted two commercial vessels—the Singapore-registered container ship "Ever Lovely" and the Panama-registered VLCC "Tiku", carrying Qatari crude—with unmanned aerial vehicles while both were transiting the southern corridor near the Omani coast. The southern route is routinely monitored and supported by U.S. naval forces, which provide navigational guidance and maritime domain awareness to commercial shipping.
