According to Alphaliner’s latest weekly market analysis, MSC’s share of the global container fleet capacity reached 21.5%—a new record high. This marks the highest market share ever achieved by a single container line; the previous benchmark was 19.3%, held by Maersk in 2018.
Since then, the market share trajectories of MSC and Maersk have diverged significantly. While Maersk remains the second-largest carrier by capacity, its current market share stands at 13.7%. CMA CGM ranks third with 12.5%.
Alphaliner observed: “Geneva-based MSC continues to expand its market share at the expense of other major carriers—and it is the only top-10 liner to have increased its capacity share this year. As the world’s largest container shipping company, MSC has effectively doubled its global market share since 2010.”
In contrast, AP Moller-Maersk has pursued a fundamentally different strategic path. In May 2024, Maersk recorded its lowest market share in two decades—a reflection of its deliberate shift away from pure vessel ownership toward integrated end-to-end logistics solutions. Since early 2024, Maersk has capped its owned and chartered fleet capacity at approximately 4.1–4.3 million TEUs.
Rounding out the top five carriers by global capacity share are COSCO Shipping Group (10.6%) and Hapag-Lloyd (7.0%).
