MSC updates EFS on European short-sea trades
2026-06-12

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has revised its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) for short-sea containerized cargo movements across key European regional trade lanes, effective 1 July 2026 based on the Bill of Lading date, and subject to further notice.

The updated EFS rates—applicable to both dry and refrigerated (reefer) containers—are as follows:

Northern Europe, UK & ScanBaltic ↔ Greece, Türkiye, Adriatic & Black Sea

  •  Dry cargo: USD 32 / EUR 27 / GBP 24 per TEU

  •  Reefer cargo: USD 48 / EUR 41 / GBP 36 per TEU

Northern Europe & UK ↔ Biscay, Northern Spain & Portugal

  •  Dry cargo: USD 15 / EUR 12 / GBP 11 per TEU

  •  Reefer cargo: USD 22 / EUR 19 / GBP 16 per TEU

ScanBaltic ↔ Biscay, Northern Spain & Portugal

  •  Dry cargo: USD 30 / EUR 25 per TEU

  •  Reefer cargo: USD 44 / EUR 37 per TEU

Intra-Northern Europe, UK & ScanBaltic

  •  Dry cargo: USD 22 / EUR 19 / GBP 16 per TEU

  •  Reefer cargo: USD 33 / EUR 28 / GBP 25 per TEU

Intra-Greece, Türkiye & Black Sea

  •  Dry cargo: USD 35 / EUR 30 per TEU

  •  Reefer cargo: USD 53 / EUR 45 per TEU

MSC confirms that the revised EFS applies uniformly to all containerized cargo transported on the above-mentioned short-sea routes, irrespective of contract type. This adjustment reflects the carrier’s continued commitment to aligning surcharge mechanisms with evolving fuel cost dynamics across its regional short-sea network.
