Maersk has introduced a Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS) on its X4FS service for shipments originating from Shanghai, Qingdao, Xingang, and Dalian in China to key ports in Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, effective for bookings with a price calculation date of May 29, 2026.
The surcharge applies to:
(1) 20-foot dry containers—including standard dry, bulk, collapsible flat rack, flat rack, hive, pallet-wide, open-top, tank, and twin-deck variants—with a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) exceeding 20 metric tonnes; and
(2) 40-foot non-operating refrigerated containers with a VGM exceeding 23 metric tonnes (25 metric tonnes for Buenos Aires-bound units).
Applicable rates are as follows:
• Brazil (Santos, Itapoa, Itajai, Paranagua): USD 400 per unit for both equipment categories meeting their respective VGM thresholds;
• Uruguay (Montevideo): USD 400 per unit for both equipment categories;
• Argentina (Buenos Aires): USD 400 per 20-foot dry container with VGM > 20 tonnes; USD 200 per 40-foot non-operating reefer container with VGM > 25 tonnes.
This measure reflects operational requirements associated with handling high-mass cargo, including enhanced stowage planning, structural reinforcement considerations, and port-specific weight compliance protocols.
