ONE updates EFS across global trade lanes
2026-04-30

Ocean Network Express (ONE) has announced a revision to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS), effective 1 May 2026, in response to sustained volatility in global bunker fuel prices and evolving market dynamics across key shipping corridors.

The updated EFS applies uniformly across all major trade lanes—including transoceanic long-haul services and regional short-sea routes—and covers both head-haul and back-haul movements. For long-haul head-haul trades, the EFS is set at USD 120 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) for standard dry containers and USD 160 per TEU for refrigerated (reefer) units. On corresponding back-haul services, the surcharge is USD 60 per TEU for dry cargo and USD 80 per TEU for reefers.

For short-sea trades, the EFS is standardized at USD 60 per TEU for dry containers and USD 80 per TEU for reefer units—regardless of direction—reflecting the consistent fuel cost exposure inherent in regional operations.

The revised EFS will apply to all shipments, including those subject to U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) regulation, as well as non-FMC-regulated trades involving the United States, Canada, and associated overseas territories. Implementation is contingent upon compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; where formal approval is mandated, the surcharge will become effective upon receipt of such authorization.

ONE confirms that this adjustment remains temporary and exceptional in nature. The company will continue to monitor global bunker price indices, supply chain developments, and regulatory guidance on a weekly basis. Should material changes occur in fuel costs or operational conditions, ONE reserves the right to revise the EFS—with appropriate advance notice provided in accordance with contractual terms and regulatory obligations.
