MSC updates emergency fuel surcharge
2026-04-17

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced an update to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS), effective April 16, 2026 (based on bill of lading date) through April 30, 2026. The adjustment follows sustained volatility in global marine fuel markets, driven in part by recent geopolitical developments in the Middle East—resulting in elevated bunker prices, constrained supply availability at key ports, and increased operational costs across MSC’s network.

The revised EFS applies to all containerized cargo movements between the following trade lanes, in both directions:

• Northern Europe (including the UK) ↔ Red Sea, East Africa, West Mediterranean, and Adriatic

• Scanbaltic ↔ Red Sea, East Africa, West Mediterranean, and Adriatic

Applicable rates (per TEU) are as pictures:

This EFS revision reflects MSC’s ongoing efforts to maintain service reliability and financial sustainability amid persistent fuel market uncertainty. As with all surcharges, the EFS remains subject to periodic review and may be adjusted in response to evolving cost conditions.
