According to analyst Alphaliner both Evergreen and Cosco Shipping have dropped the MEA4 and MEA5 loops between Asia and the Middle East that they offered as part of the alliance.
In its weekly newsletter Alphaliner said that Evergreen, the sole operator of the MEA4 service was gradually phasing out all tonnage on the service that previously connected Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Shekou, Port Kelang, Jebel Ali, Dammam, Umm Qasr, and Jebel Ali.
The final voyage on the MEA4 route will be completed on 7 April when the 9,466 teu Ever Laden calls in Ningbo, China. The Ever Laden was one of eight 9,500 teu ships deployed on the service by the Taiwanese line.
Meanwhile Cosco is discontinuing the MEA5 service under the Ocean Alliance of which it is the sole operator utilising seven megamax sized container ships. The service previously called Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Nansha, Singapore, Jebel Ali, Khalifa Seaport, and Dammam.
According to report only the 19,273 teu "Cosco Shipping Aquarius" remains in service which is awaiting to discharge at the port of Sohar in Oman after diverting from its usual routing.
On dedicated loop between Asia and the Middle East by the Ocean Alliance MEA1 remains operational. The service offered by CMA CGM now turns before back to Asia before the Strait of Hormuz calling at Khor Fakken, UAE and Sohar, Oman in the Middle East.
Container lines are increasingly seeking to serve the Asia – Middle East trade via overland connections from Turkey and Saudi Arabian Red Sea ports. Due to the ongoing security threat from the Houthi in the Red Sea these services route from Asia via the Cape of Good Hope into the Med with either direct calls into Turkish ports or connections to Saudi Red Sea terminals.
