TSL return to Mawei Shipbuilding for newbuild
2026-03-28

TS Lines, a container shipping company headquartered in Taiwan of China has formally signed a construction contract with Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for four 2,900-TEU container vessels, all scheduled for delivery by May 2029.

This agreement represents the second collaboration between TS Lines and Mawei Shipbuilding within six months. In November 2025, the two parties concluded an earlier contract for the same vessel specification—comprising two firm orders and two optional units—with deliveries targeted for mid-2028.

With this latest order, TS Lines total commissioning of 2,900-TEU container ships at Mawei Shipbuilding reaches six vessels, reflecting a cumulative investment of approximately USD 252.9 million.

The vessels feature a “Chittagongmax” wide-body design, with principal dimensions of 185.99 meters in length, 35.20 meters in beam, and a loaded draft of 11.00 meters; their deadweight tonnage is approximately 36,380 metric tons. Equipped with an S-Bow hull form to minimize wave resistance, they are engineered for high energy efficiency, economical operation, and compliance with international environmental standards—including IMO Tier III emissions requirements. These vessels are slated for deployment primarily on South Asian trade lanes, notably services connecting to Chittagong and other key ports in Bangladesh.

TS Lines reaffirmed that increasing its owned-vessel ratio remains a cornerstone of its long-term strategy—aimed at mitigating exposure to charter market volatility, optimizing unit operating costs, and strengthening sustainable competitive advantage.

Currently ranked 20th globally among container liner operators (by fleet TEU capacity), TS Lines operates a fleet of 40 vessels, of which 36 are wholly owned and only four chartered—yielding an asset ownership ratio of 90%, among the highest in the industry.
