Crazy congestion! CMA CGM officially announces West Africa congestion surcharge
2026-10-28

The surcharges will become applicable on November 1, 2026, based on the vessel loading date. For shipments originating from the United States and Brazil, implementation will be deferred to November 15, 2026.

This measure reflects persistent operational challenges—including extended dwell times, limited berth availability, and reduced terminal productivity—currently observed at the aforementioned ports.

Tema Surcharge Structure

For dry containers destined to Tema, a surcharge of €200 or USD 200 per container will apply, depending on the port of loading. Specifically, shipments originating from the Far East will incur a charge of USD 200 per TEU.

Refrigerated containers (reefers) will be subject to a higher surcharge of €850 per TEU for European origins or USD 1,000 per TEU for non-European origins.

These charges apply to cargo originating from the Far East, Europe, the Mediterranean region, North Africa, and the Americas.

Monrovia Surcharge Structure

For dry containers from Northern Europe, the Western Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea, and North Africa, the surcharge is EUR 250 per container; refrigerated containers from these regions will incur EUR 600 per TEU.

Shipments from the Far East, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East Gulf, North America, South America, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Black Sea, as well as specified Central American and Caribbean origins, will be subject to USD 300 per dry container or USD 700 per reefer TEU.

CMA CGM confirms that the PCS will be invoiced concurrently with base freight charges and reflected in the final ocean freight bill.
