Stunned! Hapag-Lloyd acquires 25% stake in Rotterdam port terminal
2026-08-27

This strategic investment secures long-term access to advanced terminal infrastructure—specifically automated container handling capacity—at a pivotal European hub within the Gemini Cooperation framework. APM Terminals retains full operational responsibility for terminal management and day-to-day operations. Financial details of the transaction remain confidential.

The acquisition reinforces Hapag-Lloyd’s integrated terminal footprint in Rotterdam and supports the ongoing expansion of Maasvlakte II, which includes: (i) an additional 1,000 metres of deep-sea quay (bringing total berth length to 2,000 metres); (ii) expanded yard capacity; (iii) four new rail-served tracks; and (iv) deployment of Automated Terminal Tractors (ATTs) and other next-generation automation systems. Upon completion of the expansion, the terminal’s designed annual throughput capacity will reach 5.4 million TEUs.

Dheeraj Bhatia, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer of Hapag-Lloyd and CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals, stated: “This investment strengthens the resilience, efficiency, and service reliability of our global network—and advances our strategic objective to develop a vertically integrated, high-performance terminal portfolio in key gateway markets.”

Keith Svendsen, Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals, affirmed that the investment reflects strong confidence in Maasvlakte II’s critical role in enhancing the scalability and operational excellence of the Gemini network.

The transaction remains conditional upon receipt of all required regulatory approvals.
