$2,000 per TEU increase! Hapag-Lloyd strikes hard!
2026-08-10

Hapag-Lloyd has announced a General Rate Increase/Adjustment (GRI/GRA) and an updated Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) applicable to selected trade lanes from Asia and the Middle East to North America. Both measures are set at USD 2,000 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) and will become effective on 1 September 2026. While the monetary value is identical, the geographic scope and applicability criteria for each surcharge differ significantly.

The GRI/GRA applies specifically to shipments originating from the Indian Subcontinent, Pakistan, and the Middle East destined for the United States and Canada. It covers all standard 20-foot and 40-foot container types—including dry, refrigerated (reefer), and special-purpose units (e.g., high-cube containers). The adjustment will apply to all full containers gated into origin terminals on or after 1 September 2026 and shall remain in force until further notice.

Concurrently, the revised PSS applies to shipments originating from the Indian Subcontinent, Pakistan, and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) bound for North America. Like the GRI/GRA, it encompasses 20-foot and 40-foot dry, reefer, and special-purpose containers, including high-cube variants. The PSS will be levied on sailings with a tariffing date on or after 1 September 2026 and will remain effective until further notice.
