The tender, reported by DynaLiners, grants Indian shipyards the right of first refusal to match competitively priced and technically compliant bids submitted by foreign shipbuilders.
To qualify, domestic shipyards must either demonstrate proven technical capability and prior experience in building medium-sized container vessels—or formally partner with internationally recognised naval architects or shipbuilders with expertise in low-carbon fuel systems. This requirement ensures adherence to stringent design, safety, and environmental standards associated with methanol-fuelled propulsion.
The initiative aligns with SCI’s strategic fleet modernisation programme and supports India’s broader maritime decarbonisation goals, while simultaneously strengthening domestic shipbuilding capacity and fostering indigenous competence in alternative-fuel vessel design and integration.
