Iran has publicly released official video footage documenting the seizure of the container vessel "EPAMINONDAS" in the Strait of Hormuz—an incident that has intensified regional geopolitical tensions and raised renewed concerns regarding maritime security in this strategically vital waterway.
The "EPAMINONDAS" is owned by Technomar Shipping, a Greece-based company. Technomar has confirmed that Iranian naval personnel boarded the vessel on 23 April, representing a substantive escalation beyond initial kinetic engagement and marking the first documented case of physical seizure of a commercial container ship in the Strait of Hormuz under current regional conditions.
Technomar further reported that all 21 crew members—comprising nationals of Ukraine and the Philippines—remain safe, in good health, and under the protection of Iranian authorities. To date, no casualties, injuries, or environmental incidents (including fuel leakage or hazardous cargo release) have been reported.
The released footage, disseminated via official Iranian state channels, shows both vessels at anchor within Iranian-controlled waters, with visible boarding activity and naval presence around the "EPAMINONDAS". It corroborates earlier satellite imagery and AIS data indicating their relocation from the high-seas transit corridor into port-adjacent anchorage zones.
This incident highlights acute vulnerabilities in global maritime supply chains, underscoring heightened operational risks for commercial shipping in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. It also poses significant implications for freedom of navigation, flag-state responsibilities, and the enforcement of international law—including UNCLOS provisions on innocent passage and the prohibition of unlawful seizure of civilian vessels.
