HMM Launches new MA2 service
2026-04-20

HMM has officially launched its new Mediterranean-West Africa Service (MA2), scheduled to commence operations in the second week of July 2026. The MA2 service forms a strategic pillar of HMM’s “hub-and-spoke” network model, enhancing connectivity between major east-west trunk routes and high-growth markets across West Africa.

Service Specifications

  • Commencement: Second week of July 2026

  • Operational Partnership: Jointly operated with Ocean Network Express (ONE)

  • Vessel Deployment: Five dedicated container vessels, each with a capacity of 2,800 TEU

  • Round-Trip Cycle Time: 35 days

Port Rotation (Hub-Centric Design)

Algeciras (Spain) → Tangier (Morocco) → Dakar (Senegal) → Tema (Ghana) → Lekki (Nigeria) → Abidjan (Côte d’Ivoire) → Algeciras (Spain)

*Algeciras serves as the primary transshipment hub, enabling efficient consolidation and distribution across West African ports.*

Strategic Feeder Fleet Expansion

To strengthen its regional feeder infrastructure and support the MA2 service, HMM has secured a total of 24 feeder vessels over the past six months:

  • Ten 2,800-TEU vessels: Ordered from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (March 2026)

  • Two 1,900-TEU vessels: Acquired via secondary market transactions earlier in 2026

  • Twelve vessels (1,800–2,700 TEU): Ordered in October 2025

According to an HMM senior executive, the MA2 service functions as a dedicated gateway to high-potential emerging markets in West Africa. By integrating these purpose-built feeder services with HMM’s core long-haul networks, the company is advancing its objective of building a more resilient, responsive, and geographically comprehensive global liner network.
