ESL suspends Sun Chief Express service
2026-03-25

Emirates Shipping has formally suspended the Sun Chief Express service, effective immediately. This decision terminates the carrier’s sole direct Transpacific container shipping route, as confirmed by industry intelligence provider DynaLiners.

The service—jointly operated with logistics partner United Worldwide Logistics (UWL)—connected major Southeast Asian ports, including Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Shekou, with Seattle in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Originally launched in 2022 by Swire Shipping, the Sun Chief Express was acquired by Emirates Shipping in early 2025. At the time of acquisition, Emirates Shipping had publicly announced plans to enhance the service to a weekly sailing frequency, scheduled for implementation in June 2026.

Prior to suspension, the service operated on a fixed loop: Ho Chi Minh City → Shekou → Seattle → return to Hai Phong.

The discontinuation signifies Emirates Shipping’s strategic withdrawal from the Transpacific trade lane—a move that eliminates its dedicated maritime link serving Vietnam, Southern China, and the United States.
