DP World Callao with its operations in Peru has an ambitious decarbonisation plan initiated in 2019 with the goal of reducing emissions by 90% by 2030.

In 2024, the company managed to reduce CO2e emissions by 2,200 tonnes compared to the previous year, despite increase in its operations.

Since May 2023, the terminal is supplied with 100% clean energy through the purchase of renewable energy suppliers and its own generation with solar panels.

This change has the international I-REC certification, which guarantees that the energy consumed by the electrical equipment is 100% CO2e emission-free, which prevented the emission of 6,300 tonnes of CO2e.

The operator also integrated electric trucks for container transport within the terminal, replacing the traditional diesel-powered vehicles. For these vehicles, it built the first electric charging station in a port terminal in Latin America. Its fleet of 20 electric trucks avoided the emission of more than 1,490 tonnes of CO2 by 2024.

The company also acquired three quay cranes and 12 100% electric yard cranes for the recently inaugurated expansion.

In addition, it converted ten-yard cranes (RTGs) from diesel to electric with an investment of $1 million. This conversion, together with the 12 existing electric cranes, avoided the emission of more than 3,900 tonnes of CO2e in the year.

Finally, over the last few years, operational strategies and processes have been optimised and online platforms have been implemented to reduce transfers and increase efficiency throughout the operation.

“The goal of every company is to continue to grow, but that growth should not come at the expense of climate change. That is why we are investing in our decarbonisation strategy to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% in Callao by 2030, in line with our overall reduction target of 42% globally by the same year,” said Sany Rodriguez, Senior Director of Safety, Sustainability and Environment at the company.

Globally DP World has the goal of reducing its emissions by 42% by 2030 and achieving zero net emissions by 2050.
