YM Unicorn / Source: VesselFinder
The YM Unicorn, a vessel constructed in 2013 with a capacity of 8,626 TEUs, strayed off its designated path and ran aground near a lighthouse shortly before midnight local time. The ship, which operates on the Transpacific route and had just arrived from Kaohsiung, was attempting to dock at the port.
According to the Keelung Port Traffic Control Center, the YM Unicorn veered off course near the red lighthouse in Dikou as it approached the port. In response, three tugboats were promptly sent to aid in extricating the vessel from the shallow waters.
Nevertheless, by 3.21 am local time on December 12, it was confirmed that the YM Unicorn remained grounded in front of the lighthouse. Additional port staff boarded the ship to assist the pilot in evaluating the circumstances, and four more tugboats were dispatched to offer further assistance.
The pilot’s inspection revealed that the forepeak tank of the YM Unicorn had sustained damage, leading to water leakage. The tugboats worked to refloat the vessel, which took nearly 20 minutes. Once afloat, the ship was guided to the embankment and successfully docked at Keelung West No. 19 pier at 4.35 am local time. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the ship’s crew.
The incident is currently under investigation, and Yang Ming, the ship’s operator, will address all issues related to repairs, compensation, and any resultant shipping delays. The YM Unicorn was originally scheduled to depart for Los Angeles following its stop at Keelung.
